Goals of the Wienbeck Foundation for Medical Development
The Foundation was founded in 2001 by Prof. Martin Wienbeck (1936 - 2005). It serves to improve medical care of medically underprivileged persons and underprivileged regions of the world. In particular the following steps support this aim:
- support of the underprivileged to take medical care into their own hands
- medical education and postgraduate training
- promotion of research which serves the aims of the foundation
- promotion of hygiene and prevention in medicine
The foundation cooperates with other medical, social and humanitarian organisations whenever this supports the goals of the foundation
The current focus is on helping to establish a working medical system in Afghanistan after 24 years of war and terror. This is mainly done in the area of Gastrontreology. The most important partners currently are the DAAD ("Deutscher Akademischer Austauch Dienst", an organisation run by the German government to support academic exchange with foreign countries) and the DAMF ("Dachverband Afghanisch-Medizinischen Fachpersonals", an organisation of Afghan medical staff in Germany).
A Memorandum of Understanding (pdf, 67kb) was signed by the Afghan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prof. Roland Gugler for the foundation on June 28th 2005. It includes a description of the things achieved so far and the goals and perspectives of the future work in Afghanistan.
